Newcastle Red Bulls are saddened to learn of the death of club great and Hall of Fame member, John Short.

JOHN SHORT
It is with the deepest sadness that the club has heard of the recent death of one of our greatest members, John Short, who sadly lost his battle with cancer.
In the 149 year history of our great club, no individual can have contributed more than John.
Having moved to the area in 1974 through work, John joined Gosforth and represented the club with distinction until his retirement from playing aged 52!
He played in the 1976 John Player Cup winning side and, after a five-year spell abroad, he returned to play for various sides before finally retiring from playing after achieving his ambition of playing alongside his son, Christian.

After retiring he continued to serve the club as a generous sponsor and administrator.
He became the first President of the new Gosforth from 2004-2006; club Chairman and Playing Chairman for several years. On our move to Druid Park in 2007 he was highly instrumental in getting the RFU to change its policy on the use of plastic pitches. Via Bullocksteads and Broadway West, John continued his vital support of the club.
Indeed, without this support I, personally, feel that what we now have at Broadway West would have been at great risk of disappearing.
Since our move here in 2015 John has been a constant supporter – mainly by running touch at every game. He was proud to be recognised as the oldest TJ in our League and last season he even officiated at every single game, both home and away, including two trips down to Whitby!
He will be sadly missed by all connected to the club, both past and present. Our sincere condolences go to his loving family: Claire, Christian, Amanda, Samantha, Juliette and Becky and their families. RIP, Shorty!
